Media Contact AccessibleNet Starts Pre-LaunchCreates initiative aimed at creating more than 100,000 accessible websites
Bainbridge, Georgia – April 27, 2009 – Butler New Media, a disability services firm announces the official pre-launch of a new movement and business opportunity dedicated to making the world wide web more accessible to people with disabilities worldwide. With the name AccessibleNet and the slogan “Bringing REAL Change to the Web”, participants in the program will have the opportunity to make money by helping businesses design/redesign their websites to be more accessible to people with disabilities. Businesses will benefit by opening up their products and services to a large, untapped market with tremendous spending power. The project has a goal of creating more than 100,000+ accessible websites over the next several years. It is currently estimated that ninety percent of the sites online are inaccessible to people with disabilities.
People with disabilities make up a market of more than 54 million individuals in the United States. The community has a combined spending power of more than $1 trillion and crosses all ethnic and socioeconomic groups. It is a market that is simply too big to ignore. AccessibleNet is the vision of Butler New Media co-founder and person with a disability, Cornelius Butler. He is an alumnus of Georgia’s High School/High Tech Program and the first person in the nation to start a business after graduating from the program. He wanted to provide an easier way for corporations and other organizations to interact and transact with the large and diverse disability market. He realized as a legally blind individual that numerous websites online cannot be used by people with disabilities due to the way that they are designed. “I wanted to make it easier for the disability community to participate in the digital economy. I believe that this project will break new ground in building awareness about the disability community and market. What people do not realize is that making a site accessible does not require a massive redesign in most cases” said Butler. The topic of web accessibility has been in the news many times recently due to lawsuits levied against firms such as Target. Each site created/redesigned by AccessibleNet will carry a special seal that when clicked provides in-depth information on the accessibility features of the site. Sites will also be featured in Shop Accessible, a first of its kind online directory of accessible websites that will launch in May 2009. This project aims to bring web accessibility to a larger audience by offering easy to understand affordable packages that will appeal to the masses. “I am confident that this project will lead to thousands of accessible websites that will benefit people with and without disabilities. We will help companies to learn how to effectively market to this segment” says Butler. More information can be found at the official website located at: http://www.accessiblenet.com
